three jars of oat milk recipe

Have you jumped on the non-dairy milk bandwagon? Since following my anti-inflammatory diet, I’ve been on the hunt for dairy free milks I love. So far oat milk is my favorite!

I first discovered it when we were in Hawaii last year and I had an iced matcha latte with oat milk. This gave the matcha such a special flavor I knew I needed to recreate the recipe at home so save time and money.

The best part about this recipe? You don’t have to soak anything for hours in advance. You just blend it all together right away and you have oat milk in 5 minutes. All you need is a blender and a Rawsome Creations Nut Milk Bag to get the benefits of making your own.

What is oat milk?

Oat milk is exactly what it sounds like! Milk that is made from oats. I recommend using an organic and gluten free oats to make the best quality oats milk. It’s a lactose free, dairy free and vegan milk alternative that’s great for coffee, cereal, smoothies and more!

Is oat milk tasty?

Oat milk is really tasty! It’s my favorite taste dairy free milk I’ve tried yet. It’s thick and buttery and it naturally sweet. Think about cows milk that’s been soaking in a whole of shredded wheat cereal for a while—that’s what it tastes like.

Is Oat Milk Naturally Sweet?

Oat milk is naturally sweet thanks to the naturally occurring sweetness from the oats, but this recipe also includes other natural sweeteners to enhance those flavors from the oats. This recipe includes a few dates, vanilla and cinnamon to add a little more sweetness.

Is oat milk or almond milk better?

This is really up to your preference. It has a richer and more creamy taste and takes less time to make, but almond milk is lower in carbs and can be heated more easily.

If you’re following a keto diet, it may not be the best choice for you because it’s made from oats, of course. There are more carbs in oat milk than other non-dairy milks.

What are the benefits of oat milk?

There are so many great reasons to drink oat milk! Of course it tastes good but it’s also high in fiber and iron. It’s full of good carbs and it’s great if you’re following an anti-inflammatory diet and eat dairy free or gluten free. It’s great if you’re vegan as well!

Another great benefit: oat milk contains about 5 grams of protein per cup! If you’re vegan or vegetarian this is a great way to add some extra protein to your diet.

Oat milk calories: one glass has about 130 calories, 24 carbs and close to 3 grams of fat.

My favorite nut milk bag for this recipe:

They key to making this oat milk recipe is the Rawsome Creations Nut Milk Bag. It’s designed with a culinary background in mind so the holes are just the right size and the seams are on the outside for easy clean up.

I also love this nut milk bag because it’s ethically produced and made by an amazing team in Bali. This bag not only helps me make healthy and delicious recipes, but it also helps everyone on the production side as well.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rolled oats I used Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Oats
  • 8 cups water
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 whole pitted dates or 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup optional for sweetness
  • For chocolate oat milk: add ¼ cup cacao powder

Instructions

  • Add all of the ingredients to a high speed blender. Cover with lid and blend on high speed for 45 seconds to 1 minute and 30 seconds, being careful not to over-blend or oat milk could start to form a slimy texture.
  • To separate the milk from the pulp, place a More Than A Nut Milk Bag over a large glass measuring bowl. Pour the oat milk mixture into the bowl through the bag, squeezing the mixture through the bag so all of the liquid and pulp is separated. Compost the pulp or reserve it to use in cookies or pancakes
  • Serve at room temperature or chilled. Hot oat milk may become thick and slimy when heated. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days in a sealed glass jar. Oat milk naturally separates so shake well before serving.

Does it have a pretty good flavor by itself? Or do you only really use it in recipes/bowls/cereals/etc.

    1. Molly Leonard says:

You can definitely drink it by itself! I love the flavor.
