My husband and I are suckers for margaritas. A slightly sweet margarita with a salted rim is the perfect cocktail. We love a classic margarita at home and we love a good frozen margarita for date night. My husband always opts for a tropical margarita like mango or pineapple, so we had to test a recipe at home. This tropical cocktail is a regular on our weekend menu.

Here are the simple ingredients for this easy mango margarita recipe. Most of these are fresh ingredients and easy to find in your local grocery store. If you make margaritas often, you likely have this at home right now! Jump down to the recipe card for exact measurements.

  1. Fresh orange juice: use fresh squeezed orange juice for the best results. I love this simple hand squeezer with a built-in measuring cup.
  2. Fresh lime juice: grab a few limes and juice them yourself (just like the oranges).
  3. Blanco tequila: silver tequila is the best tequila for margaritas because it isn’t aged and is strong and great for mixing. Tequila reposado and Añejo are both great options that have been aged for up to a year. 
  4. Triple sec: This is another type of alcohol with an orange and fruity flavor. Any brand of Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier will work. 
  5. Agave: this natural sweetener enhances the natural sweetness of the mango without making it overly sweet. You can also use simple syrup. 
  6. Mango juice: Use mango juice, mango puree, or mango nectar for mango margaritas on the rocks. I you have trouble finding real mango juice at grocery stores, use this onYou can use a juice mix with mango in it if you can’t find 100% mango juice, just be mindful of the sugar content and omit the agave if you don’t want it too sweet. 
  7. Mangoes: Use fresh mangoes or frozen mango chunks depending on what you have available. I like using frozen because it gives the frozen margaritas a really thick texture, but you can use fresh mangoes and ice.

How to Make A Mango Margarita

Mango Margarita On the Rocks

Prepare glass: Add salt to a shallow bowl or dish. Run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass and dip it into the salt and set aside.

Shake drink ingredients: Add all of the ingredients to a cocktail shaker (a large mason jar with a lid works too).  If you you want to make it spicy, add 1-2 slices of jalapeño to the mixture. Shake well until combined. 

Serve it with ice: add ice cubes to the prepared glass and serve immediately. 

Or serve it straight up: add ice to the cocktail shaker and serve chilled without ice.

Frozen Mango Margarita

Prepare glass: Add salt to a shallow bowl or dish. Run a wedge of lime around the rim of your glass and dip it into the salt and set aside.

Blend drink ingredients: Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend on high for 1-2 minutes until no mango chunks remain. Add more ice if you want it thicker. If you you want to make a spicy mango margarita, add 1 small circular slice of jalapeño into the bender with the ingredients.

Serve and enjoy: Pour into the prepared glass and serve right away and enjoy the best frozen mango margarita recipe!

Recipe Variations

  • Agave syrup: try using pure maple syrup, simple syrup, or raw honey if you have those on hand. 
  • 100% mango juice: you can use a mango juice blend (like orange mango) or you can blend 3/4 cup of fresh chopped mango with 1 cup of water to create a pure. 
  • Triple sec: you can also use Cointreau, but it’s a little stronger, resulting in a more boozy margarita.
  • Make them spicy: add a small slice of jalapeño in with the mixture (for both versions) for a little spicy kick.

Recipe Tips

Make it in advance: Add all of the ingredients to the shake and mix well and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day. Shake before serving and pour over ice. For frozen, combine all of the ingredients but the frozen mango and ice in a jar. Blend it up with more ice before serving.

Mango margaritas mix: Add all of the ingredients, mix all of the ingredients, except the frozen mango and ice, in a jar with a lid. Add the mixture to the blender with the frozen ice and mango when you’re ready to serve.

How to make it spicy: Add a small circular slice of jalapeño to the shaker or blender. You can also add 1 teaspoon of chili powder to the salt for the salt rim.

Big batch: this recipe makes 4 servings but you can easily double or triple it for a crowd. You can also halve it if you want a single-serve margarita.

How do you make frozen margaritas thicker?

Try adding frozen fruit, ice, a frozen limeade or lemonade concentrate, or freezing some of the liquid ingredients ahead of making the margaritas. Also be careful not to add too much sweetener or alcohol to your mixture.

Why do people add triple sec to margaritas?

Triple sec is a type of orange-flavored liqueur, and is often added to margaritas for several reasons. It helps to round out the flavor, add sweetness to balance out the sourness, mellow out the potency, thicken the drink, and add color.

Ingredients

Salt Rim

  • 2-3 Tablespoons sea salt
  • 1-2 lime wedges
  • Make it spicy: 1 teaspoon chili powder

Mango Margarita On the Rocks

  • 1/ 2 cup orange juice (2 medium oranges)
  • 1/4 cup lime juice (2 medium limes)
  • 1/2 cup tequila blanco (silver tequila)
  • 3 tablespoons orange liqueur Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier
  • 3 tablespoons agave
  • 1 cup 100% mango juice see notes if you can’t find it
  • Make it spicy: 1 small circular slice of jalapeño

Frozen Mango Margarita

  • 3 1/2 cups ice plus more if needed
  • 2 cups frozen mango
  • 1/2 cup orange juice (2 medium oranges)
  • 1/4 cup lime juice (2 medium limes)
  • 1/2 cup silver tequila
  • 3 tablespoons Triple Sec
  • 3 tablespoons agave
  • Make it spicy: 1 small circular slice of jalapeño

Instructions 

  • Add enough sea salt to a shallow bowl or dish to just fill the bottom. Run a lime wedge around the rim of the glasses and dip it into the salt and set aside.

On the Rocks

  • Add all of the ingredients to a cocktail shaker or a large mason jar with a lid. Shake until well until combined, about 15-20 seconds. To make it spicy, add 1-2 slices of jalapeño. The longer you shake it, the spicier it will be.
  • Add ice to the prepared glasses and serve margaritas immediately. See notes for making them in advance.

Frozen Mango Margaritas

  • Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend on high for 1-2 minutes until no chunks remain and the mixture is smooth. Add more ice if you want it thicker. For spicy mango margaritas, add 1-2 slices of jalapeño to the blender with the rest of the ingredients.
  • Pour them into the prepared glasses and serve right away.

    Just made this, on the rocks. DELISH. Used Grand Marnier and Mango Nectar, which, by the way, is always available in the Latino food section at the grocery store. I used one small slice of jalapeno, and will use two for the next one. Or shake it longer.
