When that first sip of this refreshing blueberry mojito hits your lips, you’ll be taken to warm summer evenings on the patio.

A traditional Mojito is made with white rum (also known as light or silver rum), fresh mint leaves, lime, and soda water. A white rum cocktail like this recipe is lighter in flavor compared to aged rum or dark rum, allowing the flavors of fresh limes and sprigs of mint to shine.

The blueberry syrup adds sweetness and the fresh ginger gives it a zesty punch.

How to Make Fresh Blueberry Mojitos

Here are the basic steps, with images, for this delicious blueberry mojito cocktail. Skip down to the printable recipe card below for the full printable recipe.

Make blueberry simple syrup. Boil the water, granulated sugar, blueberries, and ginger in a medium saucepan until the sugar dissolves, about 3 minutes. Strain the mixture to remove pieces of blueberry and ginger. Refrigerate simple syrup until ready to make the cocktails.

Muddle: Place the blueberries and mint in a cocktail shaker and muddle the mint with some blueberries to release the mint flavors from the leaves.

Pro Tip: Be careful not to crack those tiny veins in the mint leaf because they contain chlorophyll and will make your drink bitter. You just want to press down lightly and give it a few twists with your muddler to release the mint flavors.

Shake up the cocktail: Add the simple syrup, rum, and lime juice to either a cocktail shaker or a glass with a lid and give it a shake to combine.

Pour onto ice: Pour the mixture into tall glasses over crushed ice cubes.

Garnish, and serve: Top with a splash of club soda or ginger beer and garnish with blueberries, a sprig of mint, and a lime wedge!

Recipe Variations

  • Blueberry mojito mocktails: Bypass the liquor cabinet and leave out the rum. Add a little more ice and soda water or ginger beer.
  • Strawberry mojitos: Substitute with different kinds of fruit for another flavor like a strawberry or raspberry mojito.
  • Pitcher of mojitos: Serve a crowd by doubling or tripling the recipe. Wait to add the ice and club soda to individual glasses when it’s time to serve.

Make Ahead Tips

Want to prep this blueberry cocktail ahead of time? Similar to preparing mojito pitchers, you’ll combine all ingredients aside from the ice and club soda. Leave it in the fridge for up to 3 days and when you’re ready to serve, pour it over a highball filled with ice and add club soda or ginger beer. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint, a slice of lime, and extra blueberries.

Ingredients

Blueberry Simple Syrup

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar, maple syrup, or honey
  • 1-inch knot fresh ginger optional
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries (Note 1 Frozen)

Blueberry Mojitos

  • 15-20 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup blueberry simple syrup (above)
  • 4 ounces white rum (silver rum)
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)
  • Club soda, soda water, or ginger beer to top
  • Fresh limes, mint sprig, fresh basil, and/or blueberries to garnish

Instructions

  • Bring the water, granulated sugar, blueberries and ginger to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, until the sugar is dissolved and the blueberries begin to burst. You can use spoon to mix and smash the berries. The simple syrup will turn a dark blue/purple color.
  • Strain the simple syrup through a fine mesh seive into a measuring cup to remove blueberry pieces and ginger. Allow to cool slightly in the refrigerator until you're ready to make the cocktails.
  •  Add the mint leaves and fresh blueberries to a cocktail shaker or glass jar with a lid. Use a cocktail muddler or end of a wooden spoon to press the blueberries and mint to release the juices and mint oils.
  • Pour in the simple syrup, rum, and lime juice. Close the lid and shake really well to combine the cocktail.
  • Add ice (I like crushed ice) to the bottom of two glasses. Pour the blueberry mojitos over ice. Top with ginger beer or club soda and garnish with a lime slice, mint spring, and more fresh blueberries.

Notes

Note 1. Frozen Blueberries. You can use frozen blueberries in this recipe instead of fresh. Do not thaw. Just add them to the saucepan from frozen.
